Can we ‘Uber’ assessment?

Last month I was invited to be a panel member at the Australasian Talent Conference (ATC), in Sydney. The topic: “Will assessments eliminate the interview?” Seemed thought-provoking and controversial enough. Since 2005 the team at the ATC have positioned this annual conference as a leading edge forum to help recruitment and talent managers think a little more laterally, and push the boundaries when it comes to large-scale recruitment strategy. This discussion panel went some way to explore a question we’re commonly asked at Hay Group, “What’s next in assessment?” But I think there’s a bigger issue at hand; something that requires an almost ‘Uber-like’ intervention. For those of you unfamiliar with Uber, Uber is a Google-backed technology company that is almost single-handedly turning the taxi industry on its head.

So in response to the question “Will assessments eliminate the interview?” – perhaps a highly encouraging sign for users of assessment is that my fellow panel members and I all held very similar views and opinions.
