IBM was dying when Lou Gerstner joined from Nabisco in 1992, pulled apart by an ill-advised strategy that was set to split up its businesses. Deciding that the path to redemption was to slam this plan into reverse and return to IBM’s original mission of providing customer solutions, he set about making the change happen.
