Chris Matthews – chairman

Chris matthewsChris joined Hay Group in Canada in 1975. In 1987 he was appointed chairman and chief executive of Hay Group worldwide. During his career, he has been responsible for various parts of the business including Canada, the United States, Asia/Pacific and Latin America, as well as Hay Group worldwide. In 1990 he led Hay Group through a successful management buyout from Saatchi & Saatchi.

Chris continues to play an active consulting role, working with CEOs and boards of directors to turn their business strategies into action. He works in the areas of corporate governance, executive reward, leadership transformation and organizational effectiveness.

Chris has an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business and a BBA degree from the University of New Brunswick. He recently completed a three-year term as chair of the advisory board of the Richard Ivey School of Business (a group of 50 chief executives from North America, Europe and Asia) and is a member of the World Presidents’ Organization.

Nick Boulter – global managing director, client development and reward services

Nick boulterNick helps major international companies succeed by working with their executive teams to turn their strategies into reality.

He brings insights to clients about the scale of change facing them and how they can work toward that change. He helps develop and implement talent as well as leadership transformation programs and clarifies the impact of business change on organizations and roles. He also designs reward strategies that support clients’ business direction and he supports his clients through all stages of implementing global programs.

Nick also helps organizations realize more value from their business-to-business relationships with their key clients.

Nick has extensive global consulting experience, particularly in Europe and the Middle East. Most recently he has worked with organizations in the oil, consumer and electronics sectors, although his expertise extends to public, media, property, professional services and automotive sectors.

Nick has a BA (Hons) in economics from Sussex University and an MA in economics and industrial relations from Manchester University. He is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development.

Within Hay Group, Nick is a member of our global executive committee and leads initiatives around global client development and our global reward services business. He also leads our global research and development and knowledge management processes.

Mary Fontaine – global managing director, leadership and talent practice

Mary fontaineMary is recognized as a global expert, author and speaker in the area of leadership and talent.

She has extensive consulting experience with Fortune 500 companies for over 20 years around the world by helping them to build and align the capability of their leaders and other key talent to achieve significant business results.

Mary also leads ground breaking research which provides insight and solutions in Hay Group’s leadership transformation, talent management and capability assessment service lines.

Mary received her B.S. and Ph.D. in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and has held the post of professor at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business Administration.

Stephen Kaye – chief financial officer

Stephen kayeStephen joined Hay Group in 1993. He was appointed chief financial officer of Hay Group worldwide in 1998.

Before joining Hay Group, Stephen worked with one of the leading international accountancy firms for over seven years, based in their London and Philadelphia offices. He worked extensively with professional services businesses and the insurance industry gaining significant experience working with troubled businesses that either had financial issues or problems arising from breakdowns in their internal control systems.

Stephen has a BSc (Eng) in mechanical engineering from Imperial College, London and is a chartered accountant in England and Wales.

Regional leaders

Gene Bauer – managing director, United States, Mexico and South America

Gene bauerGene directs Hay Group’s consulting in the United States. He helps organizations achieve their potential through his extensive experience of working with executive teams and boards of directors.

Gene’s expertise in executive reward, talent management and development and organizational effectiveness enables him to take a broad perspective and bring clarity to complex business challenges. He has experience working in a wide variety of organizations across many sectors; however he specializes in helping clients in retail, financial services and healthcare.

Gene graduated with honors from the University of Kansas and earned his MA and Ph.D. degrees in counselling psychology from the University of Missouri in Columbia. Gene has worked for Hay Group for 25 years.

Israel Berman – managing director, Asia-Pacific & Africa Region and global managing director, building effective organizations

Israel bermanIsrael is responsible for leading and directing our client engagements across Asia, Pacific, and Africa. He is also concurrently the global managing director for the building effective organizations and Hay Group Insight practices.

A business veteran with over 23 years of experience, Israel brings in-depth global experience to help clients turn their strategic vision into working reality. This includes hands-on leadership of international teams working on mergers and acquisitions, strategy development and implementation and organizational restructuring – both as a corporate executive and Hay Group management consultant.

Israel provides a wide range of insights and advice in the areas of strategy decoding and business analysis, value chain and operating model design, organizational restructuring, capability building and change management.

Israel started Hay Group’s operations in Israel in 2004 and served as general manager until his appointment to lead the building effective organizations practice.

Prior to joining Hay Group, Israel held senior corporate roles in companies such as Best Foods. He holds an MBA from the Reccanati Business School at the Tel-Aviv University, majoring in organizational behavior; and a BA from Ben-Gurion University, majoring in behavioral sciences.

Thomas Maurer – managing director, EME

Thomas maurerThomas leads Hay Group’s activities in Europe and the Middle East in order to ensure consistent quality and seamless international service for our clients.

He works with many sectors but his primary focus is with major international clients in the insurance, reinsurance and manufacturing sectors.

Thomas helps his international and global clients work to their full potential by aligning leadership teams, organizational culture and structures, roles and people capabilities, so clients can effectively implement their business strategy. He concentrates on developing and improving existing organizational structures as well as focusing on socio-economic efficiency within large organizations.

Thomas holds a degree in economics from the University of Cologne and is a member of various professional organizations.
